The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday directed Aligarh Muslim University authorities to allow entry of girl students inside its central Maulana Azad library.
According to reports, the University has agreed to open its central library to women students.
Earlier, there had been a public outcry over AMU vice chancellor Lieutenant General (retired) Zameer Uddin Shah's statement regarding girl students visiting the library.
Lieutenant General (retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah had earlier this month in his defence said that he had been misquoted, adding that the university stringently works to provide equal rights and opportunities to women. He had also said that women already have access to books in the library, adding that he had made no statements about male students bothering them. He also noted that till the Maulana Azad library is expanded, it cannot accommodate any more students.
The Centre had taken note of this statement, with Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani seeking a report on the same.
