American track and field sprinter Tyson Gay has got banned for a year after failing drugs test.

The former 100-metre and 200-metre world champion got suspended after he tested positive for a banned anabolic steroid.

According to the BBC, Gay has also returned the silver medal he won in the 4x100-metre relay at the London Olympics two years ago as his results since 15 July 2012, the day he first used a product containing a banned substance, have been declared invalid. ay reportedly tested positive at the US World Championship trials on 23 June 2013, which was one of the three tests he failed with two taken out of competition, and his suspension has been backdated to that day.

Gay could have faced a two-year ban but got a lighter penalty for cooperating with the US Anti-Doping Agency (Usada) and the joint-second fastest man ever over 100-metre, is eligible to return next month and can also compete in future Olympics and World Championships.

Usada chief executive Travis Tygart said that they appreciate Gay doing the right thing by immediately withdrawing from the competition once he had been notified, for accepting responsibility for his decisions, and fully and truthfully co-operating with them.

Gay expressed his regret immediately after his positive test at last year's US World Championship trials and said that he does not have a sabotage story, as he basically put his trust in someone and has been let down.

Gay also said that he hopes that he is able to run again, but he would take whatever punishment he gets like a man.
