South Africa managed to hold their own against a spirited Pakistan attack on the opening day of the first Test in Abu Dhabi on Monday, boosted by a century from unbeaten veteran Hashim Amla (118 not out) at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

According to Sport24, the right-handed Amla made 71 and took his side, which won the toss, to 152-4 at tea from a precarious 104-4, while Jean-Paul Duminy was the other not out batsman on 36, having added 48 for the unbroken fifth wicket stand with Amla.

The report mentioned that Pakistan's spin-cum pace attack ruled the day, with tall pacemen Mohammad Irfan (2-38) and Junaid Khan (1-38) generating lively pace in the first session.

Spinner Zulfiqar Babar and opener Shan Masood made Test debuts for Pakistan, the report added.
