The Kerala-based Mata Amritanandamayi Math has offered help to the Jammu and Kashmir Government in the reconstruction of fully damaged houses of poor in the recent floods.
A delegation from the Math, led by Swami Nijamritha Chaitanya, recently met state Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and conveyed the math's willingness to reconstruct 100-300 houses.
Chief Minister Abdullah appreciated the efforts by the Math in the past one month to provide succor to people affected by the devastating floods in different parts of the state, and specifically the recent medical relief provided to people in the two badly affected districts of Bandipore and Badgam in the state.
A team of 20 doctors, including a dental surgeon, veterinary doctor and paramedics conducted camps for ten days in Bandipore in northern Kashmir and Badgam in south Kashmir to provide medical relief in worst-affected villages.
A fully equipped mobile hospital and a telemedicine unit were also pressed into service to provide critical care. Over 6,000 people from these areas availed the medical facilities like consultation with specialists, free medicines and pathological tests.
The Amrita Institute for Medical Sciences has been at the forefront of rendering free medical care to people hit by natural disasters across the country since 2007. During Bihar flood in 2008, Andhra-Karnataka flood in 2009, Kedarnath (Uttarakhand) landslides in 2013 the Mobile Tele-Medicine Unit alongwith disaster management team had rendered exclusive medical relief services to the affected people.
A total 548 medical camps have been conducted by the Mobile Tele Medicine Unit of AIMS during the period 2007-2014.
