Anirban Lahiri continued his meteoric rise as he finished tied for the fifth place at the US PGA Championship, the best performance displayed by an Indian golfer at a major till date.

The 28-year-old fired a closing round of 68 to finish the year's final major for a total of 13-under 275 alongside American Brooks Koepka.

Lahiri, who had won the Malaysian Open and Indian Open earlier this year, is also primed to secure a spot on the International team to face United States at the Presidents Cup, which starts from October 8 in Incheon, South Korea.

Lahiri bettered the record set by Jeev Milkha Singh, who finished tied for the ninth place in the PGA Championship in 2008.

Australian golfer Jason Day clinched his first major title after finishing at a record score of 20 under par at the US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.

Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth, the reigning Masters and US Open champion, finished three strokes behind in second place and in the process dethroned Rory McIlroy as the top-ranked golfer in the world.
