Defence Minister A.K.Antony gave away Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) awards for the year 2012 on Wednesday to 43 individual scientists and teams of DRDO, partners of DRDO from other sectors for their outstanding contribution in various areas of technology.
The awards were given away in the presence of Minister of State for Defence Jitendra Singh, Dr. V.K.Saraswat, Director General, DRDO and Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, and a galaxy of dignitaries at a brief ceremony at the Kothari Auditorium of DRDO Bhawan.
An exhibition of DRDO products related to these awards was also organised on the occasion.
A workshop on autonomous vehicles was also held on the same day. It was inaugurated by Dr. Vijay Kumar Saraswat.
The workshop focussed on technologies and challenges associated with the development of autonomous vehicles for the three realms of air, land surface and underwater.
The DRDO awards were given away for 14 categories.

The DRDO Life Time Achievement Award was conferred on Dr. Eswara Bhagiratharao for his distinguished contributions in the areas of electronics, communication and Electronic Warfare (EW) systems and his exceptional contributions in multiple array of technologies and management initiatives.
Technology Leadership Awards were given away to three scientists in recognition for their outstanding contributions and leadership qualities.
Scientist of the Year awards were conferred on 15 scientists.
Academy Excellence Awards were conferred on Professor Tapan Kumar Ghoshal, Professor of Electrical Engineering, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and Professor Rajaram Nagappa, Professor, National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bengaluru.
Best Techno Managerial Services Award was given to Nabanita R Krishnan, Scientist 'G' and Director, Dte. Of Management Information System and Technologies (DMIST), DRDO HQrs and her team.
Popular Science Communication Awards were given to: Ravi Kumar Gupta, Scientist 'G' and Director, Dte. Of Public Interface, DRDO HQrs and his team,Sunil Sharma, Scientist 'F', Director, Dte. Of Rajbhasha and Director and Dte of Strategic Systems (SS), DRDO headquarters.
The Silicon Trophy for the Best Systems Laboratory of DRDO was awarded to Research and Development Establishment (Engineers) Pune.
The Titanium Trophy for the Best Science Laboratory of DRDO was awarded to the Centre for Fire Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES), Delhi.
DRDO awards for Path Breaking Research and Outstanding Technology for 2012 was conferred on: Dr. S Christopher, Distinguished Scientist and Director, Centre for Air Borne Systems (CABS), Bengaluru and his team and Dr. Dev Raj Saroha, Scientist 'G', Terminal Ballistic Research Laboratory (TBRL), Chandigarh, and his team.
The Agni Award for Excellence in Self-Reliance was conferred on Dr. S.C. Sati, Director, Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra, Dr. Ajay Kumar, Scientist 'F', Instruments Research and Development Establishment (IRDE), Dehradun, V.S. Chandrashekar, Outstanding Scientist, Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bengaluru, Cmde Ranjit Singh, Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL), Hyderabad, C.H. Swamulu, Scientist 'F', Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR), Bengaluru, B H V S Narayana Murthy, Scientist 'G', Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad and Air Marshal (Retired) B N Gokhale, former Vice Chief of Air Staff.
