Indian and Pakistani betting agents, who were nabbed by the Sri Lanka Cricket's Anti-Corruption Unit at the P. Sara Oval in Colombo last week, have been released as there were no local laws to prosecute them.
Retired Senior Police Superintendent Lakshman de Silva, who is the unit head, said that they interrogated two Pakistani and three Indian men who were supplying match commentaries to bookies in India and Pakistan while the second Test was in progress between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, the Dawn reported.
He, however, clarified that they wanted to find out whether culprits had any local connection but there were no leads to work upon.
He insisted that betting was illegal in Sri Lanka but the laws against betting were very weak and therefore, all that they could do was to get their personal details, eject them from the venue and ban them from entering the playing venues during the ongoing series.
