Mobile Internet service in parts of the Kashmir Valley was suspended on Thursday in the wake of protests triggered by the death of four people over "molestation" of a girl allegedly by a soldier in Handwara town of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.

As uneasy calm prevailed in the Valley as the police continue to place restrictions in several parts for the second day.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had yesterday told reporters in the national capital that she had spoken to Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, who assured her that the guilty would not be spared.

"I spoke to Lt General DS Hooda and Defence Minister Parrikar and they have assured me that an enquiry has been set in place and that those responsible will be punished. The family of the victims will also be compensated," she added.

Speaking to ANI after meeting with Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu here, Mufti said the incidence of violence was unfortunate and should never have happened.
