With crimes against women on the rise, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi inaugurated a ten-day free self-defence training camp to empower them.

Organised by the North East Girls Students Association (NEGSA), more than 600 girls have enrolled for the training programme.

The aim of the camp is to impart the basic judo techniques to the girl students and workingwomen, so that they can protect themselves from any threat.

Gogoi motivated the girl students and encouraged women from different villages of the state to come forward and undergo training for self defence.

"We want to take this step in a very big way; we want even women from villages to learn martial arts for their self-defence," said Gogoi.

Gogoi showed a few hand skills for defence, with girls wearing judo uniform with a black belt.

He also said that steps would be taken to give judo lessons in the schools as well.

General Secretary of northeast girls' students association (NEGSA), Munmi Dutta felt that the initiative would decrease crime rate in the society.

"We have taken this initiative on behalf of 'North East Girls Students Association'. The aim is to teach self-defence training to all the girls. We feel that this would boost the confidence in girls and at the same time it will decrease the crime rate," said Dutta.

Experts from 'All Assam Judo Association' will provide training to the girls.

Hailing the initiative, Seema Noyogi, a participant said that the game would help the girls in protecting themselves from an untoward incident.

"This game would benefit us, as we would learn techniques to protect ourselves, if men approach us on the road. We can protect ourselves from any crime. We feel good by practicing this game. We feel proud that girls are coming forward. It is a very good game for self-defence, especially when boys and men disturb us," said Noyogi.

The training programme will not only ensure their security but at the same time will boost their confidence.
