Tensions prevailed at Assam-Nagaland border after a village council in Nagaland issued a quit notice to illegal border settlers.
The quit notice was issued on February 28 and the village council of Amboto under Wokha district in Nagaland had asked the residents of Bhaiko Lakhi village in Assam to leave the place within 20 days with effect from date of issuing the order.
As the situation in the border area remained tense, the district administration officials from Jorhat in Assam and Wokha in Nagaland along with village chiefs from both sides visited the site and called upon the villagers to abstain from violence and maintain peace and normalcy in the area.
"As of now let us maintain status-quo, means, we have asked both sides to observe restraint, both from the Nagaland, which is Amboto Old Village Council, and in Assam it is Bhaiko Lakhi village. We have asked both villagers of both places to observe restraint so that peace can be maintained," said Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) (Civil) Titabor, Jorhat, R.A. Korati.
The visiting officials further decided to meet again at the earliest to settle the issue amicably.
The border near Jorhat and Mokokchung has been on the boil for the past two decades. Both the states have been periodically accusing each other of violating the agreement.
