At least 33 people have died after a ferry with 173 people overturned in central Philippines in rough waters.

According to the Daily Star, the coast guard office in Manila said that the Kim Nirvana was heading from the central city of Ormoc to the island of Camotes when it overturned.

Loosely-regulated and poorly maintained ferries are the backbone of maritime travel in the sprawling archipelago.

These accidents have been frequent in the country and hundreds of lives have been claimed due to the same.

These disasters also include the world's worst peacetime maritime disaster in 1987 when the Dona Paz ferry collided with an oil tanker, leaving more than 4,300 dead.
