Australia has recalled its ambassador to Indonesia in retaliation to the "cruel and unnecessary" executions of the two Australians who were among the eight Bali Nine ringleaders who were executed on Wednesday.

According to News.com.au, Abbott said that the country "deeply regrets" the executions of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran considering how successful their rehabilitation had been.

Deploring the executions, Abbott further asserted that Australia respects Indonesia's sovereignty but "this cannot be simply business".

Abbott said that the executions formed a "dark moment" for the two countries.

Australian opposition Leader Bill Shorten and his deputy Tanya Plibersek condemned "in the strongest possible terms" the "barbaric" actions of Indonesia.
