World number one Rafael Nadal retired hurt from the Australian Open quarter-final match against Marin Cilic on Tuesday.
The Spaniard retired in the fifth set of the game, trailing 6-3, 3-6, 7-6, 2-6, 0-2 here at the Rod Laver Arena.
The sixteen-time Grand Slam winner appeared in clear pain while playing and also took a medical time-out in the fourth set for treatment for an apparent hip injury.
Nadal's retirement has thus setup a semifinal showdown between Cilic and Kyle Edmund on Thursday.
