Ireland looks set to miss out on a World Cup spot in Brazil after they suffered a 1-0 loss to Austria, as Robbie Keane failed to find any breakthroughs.

According to the Mirror, Giovanni Trapattoni's reign as Republic of Ireland manager effectively came to an end in Austria as David Alaba snatched a dramatic World Cup qualifier victory.

Alaba, the man whose last-gasp strike in Dublin denied Ireland a win in March, repeated the dose 84 minutes into an encounter neither side could afford to lose to leave Austria clinging grimly to their hopes of claiming the runners-up spot in Group C, the report said.

Ireland was dealt a blow when O'Shea had to leave the field to be replaced by Ciaran Clark, the report added.
