Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have reopened the historical Hari Parbat fort as the tourist season is now at its peak in the Valley.

The renovated Hari Parbat fort was opened by the Union Tourism Secretary Parvez Dewan and other officials of tourism department. This fort is situated on the top hills of Hari Parbat Mountain known as "Kohimaran" and the surroundings of fort are full of heritage and religious places.

The fort is more than two centuries old and was closed for the public due to the insurgency and reopened again in 2007 after eighteen years. But at that time the fort was in ruins and authorities closed it once again to do some restoration work that is almost complete now.

At the foothills of the fort, one of the most famous Muslim shrines called Hazrat Sheikh Hamza Makdhoom sahib is located where hundreds of people visit every day.

On the other side, one of the oldest Hindu temples known as Sharika Devi temple and a famous Gurudwara of Sikh community is also located. The fort was built by an Afghan Governor Atta Mohammad Khan in 1808 and is now a state protected monument.
