Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sitram Yechury on Tuesday hailed the Supreme Court's notice to senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L K Advani and 19 others in connection with the Babri Masjid demolition case, adding that the culprits should be exposed after a proper investigation.

"We have been saying this for years. When it comes to justice, there are lots of shortcomings in our country. It is a charge sheet by a special designated court. Now, the Supreme Court has done the right thing, even if it has delayed," Yechury told ANI.

"There should be a proper investigation, and they should finally tell people who the culprit is. Even the Liberhan Commission was formed; everyone knows who is behind it. Now, the government should take note of this Supreme Court order," he added.

The Supreme Court had issued the notice based on a petition filed by Haji Mehboob challenging the 2010 Allahabad High Court verdict discharging them of criminal conspiracy in the demolition of Babri Masjid on December 06, 1992.

Top BJP leaders, including Uma Bharti, Murli Manohar Joshi and Kalyan Singh are amongst those notified by the apex court.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been granted four weeks time to respond to the plea in the case.

On December 6, 1992, a mob of Hindu religious volunteers demolished the Babri mosque allegedly built by the Mughal ruler Babar in the sixteenth century at a place where Lord Ram temple existed. Hindus regard Ayodhya as the birth place of Lord Rama.
