Bahrain's main Shia opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman has been sentenced to four years imprisonment on charges of inciting violence.

According to BBC, Sheikh Salman was convicted of inciting hatred, promoting disobedience and "insulting" public institutions.

The Sunni-led government has been accused by his al-Wefaq movement of aggravating the country's crisis with Sheikh Salman's sentencing.

The charges against Sheikh Salman relate to a series of statements made in a public speech last year.

He was, however, acquitted of inciting political change by force.
