Band Aid 30's Ebola charity song shoots to top of UK singles chart

Band Aid 30's Ebola charity single 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' has shot up to claim the top spot in the UK singles chart.

The song, which has been performed by top artists including Geldof, Bono, Ed Sheeran, One Direction, Emile Sande, Rita Ora and Ellie Goulding among others, is aimed at raising money for ebola crisis in West Africa, and has already sold more than 312,000 copies, making it 2014's fastest-selling single so far, the BBC reported.

Geldof, who organized the whole thing, thanked everyone via radio saying that he was "so proud" adding that he didn't expect "such vast and willing numbers" and that the song was also at number one in France with other versions number one in 61 countries.

The remaining of the UK top five consisted mainly of new entries including 'Real Love from Clean Bandit FT Jess Glynne' entering at number two, Olly Murs' 'Wrapped Up FT Travie McCoy' at three, David Guetta at number five with 'Dangerous FT Sam Martin', while Ed Sheeran's former number one 'Thinking Out Loud' dropped two places to number four.

Meanwhile, One Direction raked the album chart with their latest offering 'Four' for the third consecutive UK number one.
