Bangkok, the transport hub has been touted as the first Asian city to be the world's most popular air travel destination according to a ranking by the MasterCard Index of Global Destination Cities.
Bangkok led the 2013 list based on foreigner visits in the city, Stuff.co.nz reports.
Dr Yuwa Hedrick-Wong, who compiled the index, said that Bangkok heavily benefits from its air links to the fastest-growing cities across the world, especially in China and Japan, adding that visits to the Thailand capital are expected to increase by 9.8 percent this year.
The ranking based on the city's expected international air travel arrivals and the amount of money spent in the city during the arrivals, shows Istanbul visits increased by 9.5 percent, and visits to Dubai likely to increase by 10.9 percent.
The index further predicted that by 2016 Bangkok and London will be followed by Istanbul, Paris and Dubai, with Singapore and New York trailing them closely.
