Bangladesh Railway Minister Mohammad Mazibul Hoque has offered to restore the abandoned railway links with India that existed before the partition to boost trade and people-to-people contact.
Hoque said that he had taken a few steps for the fast implementation of Akhaurah-Agartala rail connectivity, which was a very key project and added that both nations were serious about it.
"Those rail links, which have shutdown before or after liberation, we are considering restoring most of those deserted railway linkages," said Hoque.
Bangladesh will construct 10 kilometres of the 15 kilometres railway line while five kilometres fall in India.
"Railway coactivity will surely boost trade and improve the bilateral relationship between the two nations," Hoque added.
Hoque came to India to attend a function in connection with the centenary of a school.
India had assured to provide USD 1 billion to Bangladesh for implementation of many projects, including development of railways and roadways, in 2011.
