Bangladesh's ruling Awami League 'sweeps boycotted general election'

Bangladesh's ruling Awami League has won a violence-plagued 10th general election in the country.

The Awami League has secured a huge majority in the 10th parliamentary election winning 102 out of the 147 contested seats.

According to the Daily Star, Awami League won 232 of 300 seats, including those not contested, in the polls whose outcome was never in doubt.

Meanwhile, Jatiya Party (JP) won 13 seats while Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) won two and Workers Party (WP) won four seats.

The Election Commission decided to hold the polls again in 8 constituencies: Dinajpur-4, Kurigram-4, Gaibandha-1, Gaibandha-3, Gaibandha-4, Jessore-5 and Laksmipur-1, the report added.
