US basketball team Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling, who has been banned for life by the NBA for making racist comments, has said that he should have just paid his girlfriend off in return for her silence.

Sterling had been talking to his girlfriend V. Stiviano on a recording, which got publicised last weekend, and resulted in NBA commissioner Adam Silver banishing the LA Clippers owner from the league for life.

According to News.com.au, Sterling had been heard on the recording saying that he did not want Stiviano to post selfies with African Americans on social media websites and also to not bring black people to his game.

Sterling, who is the longest-tenured owner of a basketball team in the league, could lose his team 75 percent of 29 other NBA owners vote against him, but the threat could reportedly push him to sell his team or take the NBA to court over the matter, the report added.
