Bar scandal: Kerala Excise minister K Babu resigns

Kerala Excise Minister K Babu on Saturday resigned after athe Vigilance Court in Thrissur asked the Vigilance and Anti Corruption Bureau (VACB) to register a case against him in the bar bribery scandal.

The court on Saturday instructed the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) to file the report within a month.

The probe will now be held under the supervision of the Vigilance court.

The enquiry has been ordered based on a complaint filed by social activist George Vattukulam.

As per his complaint, bar owner Biju Ramesh had alleged Minister Babu had demanded Rs. 10 crores as bribe from the bar owners for reopening the bars after the state government had decided to close them down.

Biju Ramesh had also stated publicly that the bar owners had paid Rs. 50 lakhs as advance to the Minister on October 31 last year.

Recently, Kerala Congress (M) chairman K. M. Mani was forced to quit as the finance minister after the High Court upheld the vigilance court decision to conduct further probe into the allegation that he had taken bribe from bar owners.

The precedent set in by Mani and the pressure from the Congress leaders forced Babu to quit the office.
