Swiss side Basel has completed an unlikely Champions League double victory over Chelsea by beating them 1-0 on Tuesday in their Group E clash at their home in St. Jakob-Park.
Group leaders Chelsea have nine points from five games in their group and still qualified for the knockout stages, while Basel is second on eight points and Schalke 04 third on seven points after drawing 0-0 at bottom club Steaua Bucharest.
According to Sport24, Basel, who had beaten Chelsea 2-1 away earlier in the campaign, struck the winner in the 89th minute, despite a string of outstanding saves in the first half by the visitor's goalkeeper Petr Cech, when Egyptian Mohamed Salah scored a breakaway goal.
Expressing his disappointment at the defeat, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said that his side's performance was so bad that it deserved a defeat, adding that he felt the players were tired and paid the price for the recent international break.
