Bayern Munich routed FC Porto in the second leg quarterfinal tie in order to overcome a first-leg deficit and reach the Champions League semifinals, thanks to a devastating performance in the first half of the game.
Bayern, who beat Porto 6-1 to win 7-4 on aggregate, required a 2-0 win to make it to the semifinals and they were on level aggregate within 22 minutes of the game, thanks to Thiago Alcantara's header in the 14th minute followed by Jerome Boateng's header eight minutes later.
Robert Lewandowksi put Bayern further ahead and Thomas Muller drove home for 4-0 before Lewandowski completed his brace five minutes before half-time, the BBC reported.
Jackson Martinez gave Porto some hope, but after Ivan Marcano being sent off Xabi Alonso scored from the free-kick to make it 6-1.
The result was a boost to the reputation of Bayern boss Pep Guardiola, who was in danger of suffering a Champions League humbling for a second consecutive season. Since the Spaniard took over the reigning European champions from Jupp Heynckes in 2013, they have dominated in the Bundesliga, losing only four of 63 games.
However, Bayern lost 5-0 on aggregate to Real Madrid in last year's semifinals and looked like they might struggle even to reach that stage this time following a 3-1 first-leg defeat in Portugal, the report added.
