Benedict Cumberbatch has requested his fans to not to film his stage performance of Shakespeare's 'Hamlet.'

The 39-year-old, who's playing the iconic character in a 12-week run at the Barbican theatre in London, came out after the show and said spoke about the "cameras and red lights" he spotted in the audience, adding that it was "blinding" and "mortifying," the BBC reported.

In the video clip, which was shot post-performance, Cumberbatch is seen saying, "I can't give you what I want to give you which is a live performance that you'll remember, hopefully, in your minds and brains whether it's good, bad or indifferent, rather than on your phones."

However, he said that fans were free to take pictures of him outside of the auditorium, and would be glad if they "tweet, blog, and hashtag this," since he wasn't much of a social media person.

Cumberbatch has joined the list of actors who have criticised fans for using mobile phones during a performance, which includes James McAvoy and Kevin Spacey.
