Liverpool have been eliminated from the Europa League after Brendon Rodgers' men were edged out by a spirited Besiktas side 4-5 in a pulsating penalty shootout in the round of 32 second leg in Istanbul on Friday.
Following a goalless first-half, midfielder Tolgay Arslan netted a crucial goal for Besiktas to equalize the aggregate scoreline (1-1) in the 72nd minute.
Liverpool had won all three of their previous European shootouts, but Centre-back Dejan Lovren missed a key penalty in shootout after Besiktas had scored five out of five, the BBC reported.
Key players like captain Steven Gerrard, vice-captain Jordan Henderson, centre-back Mamadou Sakho and playmaker Philippe Coutinho missed out the crucial tie due to their injuries.
