The bidding process for 2026 FIFA World Cup has been postponed after allegations were raised around 2018 and 2022 tournaments.

Russia and Qatar were selected to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups by a secret ballot of FiIFA's 22 executive members in December 2010.

However, Swiss prosecutors are now investigating alleged financial irregularities surrounding the bidding process.

Jerome Valcke, secretary general of the governing body confirmed that it was "nonsense" to begin the bidding in such a climate, the BBC reported.

The bidding for hosting the 2026 World Cup was due to take place in Kuala Lumpur in May 2017.

Valcke said that due to the situation, he thought it was nonsense to start any bidding process for the time being.

Following a meeting of the World Cup organising committee in Samara, Valcke insisted that the preparations for the FIFA Confederations Cup and the Russian FIFA World Cup as well as our first major event, the preliminary draw, are well under way and on schedule.

The US, Mexico and Canada were expected to be among the bidders for the 2026 tournament.
