Bijapur Police confirms encounter killing of three women Maoists

Chhattisgarh Police and Central Reserve POlice Force (CRPF) sources have confirmed the death of three women Maoists in an encounter in the state's Bijapur District.

They said that they had launched a joint operation On the basis of intelligence received.

"The encounter took place with a Maoist platoon of at least 30 to 35 persons. Around 100 members of police and CRPF were involved in tyhe operation. We have recovered twelve bore guns and one 303 rifle," said Bijapur Superintendent of Police K.L. Dhruv.

Maoists have killed police and politicians and targeted government buildings and railway tracks in an insurgency that has killed thousands since the 1960s.

They control large but poor areas of the region and often attack railway lines and mining operations to cripple economic activity, such as the transportation of coal to power and steel companies.

The rebels are estimated to number 7000 hardcore fighters in nearly a third of India's 630 districts.
