Bill Cosby's top lawyer assails Fordham University after they withdrew his honourary degree in the middle of sexual assault claims.

Attorney John P. Schmitt of Patterson Belknap Webb and Tyler wrote a letter to president of Fordham, saying that the statement grossly mischaracterised both Mr. Cosby's actions and his deposition testimony, in language more befitting a tabloid journal rather than a respected institution of higher learning, People reports.

Schmitt added that the mischaracterisation of Mr. Cosby's testimony was so egregious that one could only conclude that it was written by one either unfamiliar with the testimony or determined deliberately to misrepresent Mr. Cosby's words.

Fordham spokesperson said that he could not comment because he had not yet seen the letter.

Earlier, Marquette University in Milwaukee and Fordham University announced that they were withdrawing Cosby's degrees after votes by their respective boards of trustees.

Several alleged victims have come out in the open and accused the comedian of sexually assaulting them.

However, Cosby has continued to deny these accusations and statute of limitations prevent many of the accusers from taking legal action against him for his alleged assault.
