Midfielder Birkir Bjarnason smashed Iceland's first goal at the major event as Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw in their opening match of the European Championship at the Geoffroy Guichard stadium in Saint-Etienne.
Gylfi Sigurdsson had almost put Iceland ahead early but his angled shot and follow-up were both saved by the Portugal.
Portugal took the lead through midfielder Luis Nani's goal in the 31st minute of the match before Bjarnason created history by netting an equalizer in the 50th minute of the match,the Guardian reported.
Iceland will now lock horns with Hungary while Portugal will take on Austria in their next Euro 2016 clash.
