The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday distanced itself from the controversial comments made by party leader Sakshi Maharaj on Muslims, saying his statement doesn't represent the views of the party and should only be seen as his personal comments.

"I haven't gone through his (Sakshi Maharaj) statement yet. All I can say is that the country runs according to the constitution and law and order and not through dictatorship," BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told reporters.

"This shouldn't be seen as BJP's stand," he added.

With the elections dates in five states being declared, Maharaj tried to stoke a new controversy. He indirectly blamed Muslims for population boom during a public gathering in Meerut.

"Population is increased by those who support the concept of four wives and 40 children," Maharaj had said.
