The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) have reportedly begun government formation talks here last night.

BJP general secretary Ram Madhav arrived in Srinagar last evening from Jammu, and is reported to have had two rounds of talks with senior PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Baig.

The first round of talks was held at Mr. Baig's residence and the second round at a hotel where Mr. Madhav is staying.

On Thursday, Mr. Madhav attended a meeting of BJP's newly-elected MLAs in Jammu and also held several meetings in Srinagar with leaders of other Kashmir Valley-based political parties as part of efforts to possibly cobble up a BJP-led government in the state for the first time.

The PDP has secured 28 seats in the recently-held five phased assembly elections, while the BJP bagged 25. Elections were held for the 87-member state assembly.

PDP spokesman Samir Koul said talks are still at an infancy stage and it will take sometime before any announcements are made, and added that the situation will be clearer in the next three to four days.
