The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Monday that it is illegal and unconstitutional on the part of the incumbent UPA Government to announce new appointments when its tenure is coming to an end.

"It is very unfortunate that this government, which has always been a government of wrongdoings, is still making more mistakes. When your government is departing, then you don't make new appointments. It is illegal and unconstitutional to make new appointments at this point," said BJP vice president and spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

"I think the government should understand that by making new appointments in a hurried manner, it will have a bad impact on their already dented image. So, it is our stand that the government should make new appointments. It is just a matter of 15 days," he added.

Incidentally, the BJP has written to Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath complaining about the hurried manner in which the government is going ahead with the process of appointing the new army chief. The party has also pointed out that a similar approach is being undertaken in the appointment of the Lokpal.

"I think the forces should not be dragged into politics. But it is wrong on the part of the government to make appointments in a hurried manner. So, the election commission should take a considerate view of this," said Naqvi.
