Taking a jibe at the Samajwadi Party and Congress alliance for the high-voltage Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday said the people do not believe in politics because of such opportunists.

Highlighting the difference of opinion that existed between both parties few months back, BJP MP Virendra Singh said they are the people because of whom the people do not believe in politics.

"Rahul Gandhi used to say that Samajwadi Party has looted Uttar Pradesh and the people are suffering under their governance. What happened now?" he asked.

Asserting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi always fulfils the promises made to the nation, Singh alleged that the Congress and Samajwadi Party have broken the trust of the people courtesy their alliance.

Echoing similar sentiments, BJP leader Nalin Kohli said development in Uttar Pradesh will come to halt if the Samajwadi Party and Congress alliance forms the next government in the state.

"For the past five years, Uttar Pradesh has been full of corruption, crime and unprogressive administration. Along with that Congress has done so many scams in 10 years. So, this shows they will push the state in the opposite direction instead of navigating them towards development," he added.

Uttar Pradesh will be voting for a new state assembly in a seven-phase election between February 11 and March 8. Out of the 403 assembly seats, Congress will be contesting in 105 seats and the Samajwadi Party will field its candidates in rest of the 298 seats.
