The Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) has welcomed former police officer and anti-corruption activist Kiran Bedi's endorsement of Narendra Modi as the next potential prime minister of the country.

Bedi said that her vote would go for Modi in order to have a stable, well-governed and inclusive India.

"We definitely welcome this. Kiran Bedi has a position of her own. There is support pouring in for Modi from across the nation because people want good governance, leadership and they want a party who follows a definite path, giving a stable government,"BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said on Friday.

Meanwhile, aide of India's anti-graft crusader, Anna Hazare, Sunita Godara said that Bedi must have thought considerably before putting forth her choice.

"Kiran Bedi has remained an integral part of Anna Hazare's campaign, and if she is expressing her wish as a citizen that she supports Narendra Modi for PM, then she must have put a lot of thought to it," said Godara.

Indian media often presents the 2014 elections as a face-off between Rahul Gandhi, best known for his famous last name, and Narendra Modi, who has been lauded by Indian corporate leaders and foreign companies for his business-friendly policies in Gujarat.

BJP's strong showing in the recent polls in four states has boosted the momentum for Modi in the run-up to the national election due by April 2014.
