Money-losing smartphone manufacturer Blackberry has reportedly hinted that it might put itself on sale as part of its 'strategic alternatives' in a bid to revive the sinking business.

According to the BBC, Blackberry board member, Timothy Dathels will be heading a new committee which will consider different business models, including partnerships or joint ventures.

Dattels said that now was the right time to explore the alternatives as the company wants to increase the sales of its Blackberry 10 model, seen as crucial to the future of the company.

In the smartphone market dominated by Google's Android and Apple, Blackberry is seeing tougher days with its latest 10 platform unable to strike a chord with consumers.

Francisco Jeronimo from technology research firm IDC said that it is surprising to see a statement like this made publically as everyone knows the company is struggling to regain its market share and looking at option.

He further said that despite the fact that Blackberry has very strong assets and is one of the most recognised portfolios in the industry, the question is of how much they're asking and what is on offer in terms of partnerships.

The report added that the company lost 84 million dollars in the recent quarter and expects to lose more money in the three months to the end of August.
