Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has stirred a storm on Twitter after launching his presidential bid, in which he sought to distance himself from his Indian origin.
Jindal called for a uniform U.S. identity, saying that he was done with the talk about 'hyphenated Americans'.
"We are not Indian-Americans, African-Americans, Irish-Americans, rich Americans, or poor Americans. We are all Americans," he said during the launch, reported the BBC.
The statement was apparently not taken very well even by his supporters and fuelled a firestorm of jokes on Twitter, with #BobbyJindalisSoWhite trending all over the social media platform, poking fun at Jindal and dubbing his statement as a way to pass off as white despite his Indian roots.
The hashtag was started by Indian-American stand-up comic Hari Kondabolu, with a series of hilarious tweets.
