Brazil secured a place in the World Cup quarterfinals as they defeated last 16 rivals Chile in penalty shootouts to set up an all-South American last eight match against Colombia.

Goalkeeper Julio Cesar helped Brazil reach the quarterfinals with two crucial spot-kick saves to defeat Chile.

According to the BBC, Brazil's David Luiz scored in the 18th minute to provide the hosts with the lead but before half time Chile's Alexis Sanchez had scored the equaliser for his side.

Both teams failed to score as the game went into extra time, despite which the score remained at a draw till the end of the match.

However, in the penalty shootouts, Cesar saved from Mauricio Pinilla and Alexis Sanchez as Brazil went on to win a tense shootout 3-2.

Brazil's Luiz, Marcelo and Neymar put the ball past the Chilean goalkeeper in the penalty shootout, while Cesar saved three goals from their opponents allowing only Charles Aranguiz and Marcelo Diaz to score two penalties out of five for Chile.

Brazil has advanced to the quarterfinals with the win and would now face Colombia in the quarterfinal, the report added.
