A British surfer may have broken his own world record by riding what may be the biggest ever wave.
The wave, which followed a storm in Nazare, Portugal, is estimated to have attained a height of 24.3m - larger than the 23.7m record that was set by Andrew Cotton about three months ago.
The 34-year-old got towed into position by a jet ski after Atlantic storm Brigid hit the Europe's west coast.
Cotton held his position for about 10 seconds before he was consumed by wave.
He told Sky News that the wave was massive that morning and he knew that there was potential to catch potentially record-breaking waves.
Video of the record attempt was shot by Jose Pedro Gomes as an entry in the Ride of the Year category of the 2014 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards.
A definitive ruling about the record will be made by the Billabong XXL judges in March.
