The United Kingdom should not have gone into war in Iraq in 2003, former Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs and one of the closest allies of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair during the build-up to the war, Lord Falconer, has said.

The former Lord Chancellor said that the decision to join the war was based on the fact that they did not find any weapons of mass destruction there. He added, "So, on that basis, we weren't right to go in," reported the BBC.

He noted that the invasion damaged Labour everywhere and added that the Iraq war was perceived to be a mistake.

The presence of chemical and biological agents in Iraq had been a key justification for the invasion.
