Eighty-seven-year-old British Formula One great Stirling Moss is recovering from a severe chest infection in a Singapore hospital almost a month after being admitted.

The Guardian quoted his website, as saying on Saturday that one of the world's greatest Grand Prix drivers never to have won a world championship, has been in the hospital since December 22, and doctors are now saying that he is stable and his condition is improving.

The daily further stated that Stirling is in good spirits and only upset about having missed his Christmas cruise with friends.

Moss, who retired from the sport in 2011, at the age of 81, finished Formula One World Championship runner-up four years in a row from 1955.

He remains the most successful driver not to take the title, with 16 race victories. He was also the first British driver to win his home Grand Prix, in 1955. He retired from professional competition in 1962.
