Former New Zealand Test cricketer Mathew Sinclair is seeking unemployment benefits following retirement from top-level cricket.

Sinclair said the decision had to be made as he could not support wife Tina, son Liam, 4, and daughter Holly, 3, on six months of cricket pay a year.

According to stuff.co.nz, this week Sinclair went to Work and Income in Napier, New Zealand, to sign up for the unemployment benefit.

Sinclair, who scored two Test double-centuries for New Zealand, said it has been quite a tough decision but was a reality.

He however hopes to keep playing club and district cricket.
