With the counting for the by-poll results in 33 constituencies across 10 states taking place on Tuesday, a trend emerged where the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led wave for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), that was so successful in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, failed to live to its hype.

Uttar Pradesh: The Samajwadi Party (SP) managed to make huge inroads into a state that had been hit by riots last year. Despite aggressive campaigning by the BJP, especially by its Gorakhpur MP Yogi Adityanath, the BJP could only bag two of the nine seats in UP.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said, "Communal elements have been rejected, we are grateful to the people. The SP will work towards development."

Rajasthan: The Congress bagged three of the four seats which went to the polls, with the BJP winning the lone South Kota seat. Congress leader Sachin Pilot termed his party's performance as 'spectacular'.

Commenting on the Congress' comeback, former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot said, "The bypoll results indicate the people's frustration with the BJP Government. This win is a win of Congress policies."

Gujarat: The Congress managed to win two seats, while the BJP won seven out of the nine seats.

West Bengal: The BJP's biggest gain came in the eastern state, where the party made inroads into the state for the first time in the legislative assembly, winning the Basirhat Dakshin seat.

Assam: three parties won one seat each - the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), the BJP and the Congress.

Sikkim: independent candidate R N Chamling won the lone seat on poll.

Andhra Pradesh: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) candidate Tangirala Sowmya won from Nandigama, defeating her Congress rival by 74,827 votes.

Tripura: Communist Party of India (CPI-M) candidate Prabhat Chowdhurywon the lone seat from the last remaining Left state in the country.

BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain admitted that his party was expecting better results.

He said, "These polls were contested on local issues, shouldn't be seen in national context. We were expecting better results."

"We will work hard and win again. We will win the elections in Haryana and Maharashtra, although we have won in some places," he told ANI.

Union Minister Uma Bharti, however, added, "State worker and leaders need to introspect on this, Modi wave is still intact."

The BJP also had dissatisfying results in the by-polls held in July in Uttarakhand and in August in Bihar.
