Cricket Australia has confirmed that it will order an independent probe into the tragic death of batsman Phillip Hughes in an attempt to prevent similar accidents in the future.
Hughes passed away in November after succumbing to injuries he endured from a bouncer during a domestic match in Sydney. The 25-year-old South Australian batsman was knocked out after the ball made impact under his helmet, on the back of the neck.
Cricket Australia in a statement said that they have a responsibility and obligation to look into the events of that day, adding that the review would be made in a bid to prevent an accident of this nature happening again, the BBC reported.
CA chief executive James Sutherland added that they never want to see a tragedy like that to occur again on a cricket field.
The review will primarily look into the causes and circumstances which led to the player's death and the potential use of protective equipment which could protect a player's head and heart.
The review, which gets underway with the support of Hughes' family, is expected to publish its results later this year.
