A Northern California private school has issued an apology for offending parents and students because of their lunch menu to celebrate Black History Month.
Some students at Carondelet High School for Girls in Concord wanted to come up with ways at lunchtime for the occasion, but the announcement of the school menu which included fried chicken, cornbread and watermelon, angered the parents, Sky News reported.
According to KNTV-TV, the school officials held an assembly to discuss the matter and also sent a letter apologizing to parents.
Nancy Libby, the principal wrote that she would like to apologize for the announcement and any hurt it caused students, parents or community members, adding that at no time at Carondelet do they wish to perpetrate racial stereotypes.
Professor James Taylor from University of San Francisco said that chicken, watermelon, collard greens are stereotypes of black Southern culture that come from the same place where the N-word comes from.
