CBI to handle Chhota Rajan case

Maharashtra additional chief secretary (home) K.P. Bakshi on Thursday said the entire case related to fugitive gangster Chhota Rajan will be handled by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the state government would extend all help to the leading investigating agency.

"The state government has decided to hand over the investigation to the CBI, however, if the investigating agency decides to have the interrogation in Delhi, it will be Delhi, and if it decides for Mumbai, we are prepared," said Bakshi

"The case is being handed over to the CBI, because of it has expertise in handling trans-national crimes," he said.

Explaining as to why the Chhota Rajan case was being handed over to the CBI, Mumbai Police Commissioner Ahmed Javed said, "The situation has changed. Earlier, we were looking at the case from the perspective of the city, but now we are looking at it from the perspective across the states, across the country, and trans-national, as India is a party of an UN Convention."

Meanwhile, the arrested underworld don was deported from Indonesia to India.

Speaking to reporters before his deportation, Rajan said: "Jahan mera janm hua hai, wahan ja rha hun, khush hun. Mai khush hun ki apni dharti maa ke paas ja rha hun".

His deportation process was supposed to take place yesterday but it got delayed due to the presence of ash in the atmosphere following a volcanic eruption.

The 55-year-old underworld don was arrested in the popular tourist town of Bali on his arrival from Australia on October 25.

He was arrested on the basis of a Red Corner Notice from Interpol and following a tip off by Australian authorities to the Indonesian Police.
