Centre launches 'Digital northeast vision' in Guwahati

The Central Government which aims to improve digital connectivity and infuse digital literacy in all the states of the country, recently launched the 'Digital Northeast Vision Document 2022' in Guwahati.

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad and Chief Ministers of the northeastern states launched the programme.

North East Indian region has become the newest member of the Centre's flagship programme 'Digital India' initiative. Digital India was launched in 2015 by the Centre with a vision to transform the country into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy.

'Digital Northeast India Vision 2022' envisages in implementing the initiative throughout the North East through optimum utilization of information, communication, and technology.

An official of the National Information Centre (NIC) said, "The Tripura e-hospital has been implemented at 21 locations with a targeted power distribution system. NIC has also initiated three disciplines on which they are working closely with the state government in order to use the data and provide data, artificial intelligence in IOT with an improved architecture."

The vision aims to enhance peoples' lives by capacity building of government staff and doubling BPO strength in the region. It also identifies eight digital thrust areas including digital infrastructure, digital services, digital empowerment, promotion of electronics manufacturing, promotion of IT and IT-enabled services including BPOs, digital payments, innovation and startups, and cybersecurity.

Aruna Sundarajan, Secretary, Ministry of Telecommunications, who was present at the occasion said, "But we do expect to support other projects and other states of the Northeast whereby we can bring state of the art alternative technologies for connectivity to untapped areas."

The Chief Ministers of the northeastern states acknowledged that the vision will play the role of a catalyst to energise the communication of Northeast.

Under this program the Centre also plans to give e-class benefits to six medical colleges including Guwahati Medical College and Dibrugarh Medical College, thereby increasing the seating capacity of BPOs in Northeast from five to ten thousand.
