Chad's United Nations envoy has reportedly voiced his frustration over Security Council's failure to endorse a regional force to take on Boko Haram, arguing that the Nigerian militants are "more dangerous" than Islamic State (IS) fighters.

Ambassador Mahamat Cherif complained that a draft resolution circulated last week to the Security Council had "hit a wall" over a key provision invoking chapter 7 of the UN charter, reported News24.

He said, "What we do for ISIS, we should do against Boko Haram."

Chapter 7 permits member nations to use all possible means, including economic sanctions and military force, to enforce a resolution to confront a threat to world peace and security.

Diplomats said Nigeria baulked at the provision, dealing a major setback to weeks of negotiations over the draft resolution authorizing the setting up of a trust fund to help finance the regional force's operations.

Cherif admitted that a vote on the measure was not imminent.
