Experts have revealed that the birth of your first child can be the ultimate test of a couple's relationship, no matter how strong it was before the child came along.

For the study, which was conducted at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, researchers questioned 1500 new mums regarding their sexual health and intimacy, News.com.au reported.

The findings of the research showed that majority of the respondents felt less physically and emotionally content in their relationship post childbirth, and they were largely unprepared for the changes.

Women claimed that the lifestyle changes associated with having a baby, loss of freedom and loss of time together as a couple, are challenges for all new parents and can be overwhelming at times.

Some women asserted that motherhood and sexuality are contradictory roles for them.

Additionally, most women said they had sex less often, even after 12 months, compared to before they got pregnant, with intimacy taking a back seat to the love and energy being poured into their newborn.

Stephanie Brown, one of the researchers, said that a lot of relationships stumble, even the good ones, after the euphoria wears off, but they tend to bounce back again in given time.
